Creamy Baked Double Cheese and Onion Dip (Gluten-Free) Recipe

  • Author: Lily
  • Total Time: 57 minutes
  • Yield: Approximately 8 servings 1x
  • Diet: Gluten Free

Description

This creamy baked double cheese and onion dip is a deliciously rich and cheesy appetizer that combines softened cream cheese, mayonnaise, grated cheese, and sweet Vidalia onions. Baked until golden brown and bubbly, it’s perfect for serving with a variety of crackers, chips, or fresh vegetable sticks. The recipe is gluten-free and can be made with light cream cheese and mayonnaise options for a lighter version.

Ingredients

Scale

Base Ingredients

  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened (light cream cheese optional)
  • 1 cup mayonnaise (light mayonnaise optional)
  • 6 to 8 ounces grated cheese, divided (7 ounces Blarney Castle cheese used)
  • 1 medium/large sweet Vidalia onion, peeled and diced (about 1 heaping cup)

Seasonings

  • 1 teaspoon ground black pepper (or to taste)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt (or to taste)
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional, and to taste)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Spray a 9-inch pie dish or a similar-sized oven-safe baking dish with cooking spray and set aside.
  2. Prepare the Mixture: In a large bowl, add the softened cream cheese, mayonnaise, grated cheese (except for about 1/2 cup reserved for topping), diced Vidalia onion, ground black pepper, salt, and optional cayenne pepper. Stir everything together until the mixture is well combined and creamy.
  3. Transfer to Dish: Pour the cheese and onion mixture into the prepared baking dish. Use a spatula to smooth the top evenly for even baking.
  4. Add Cheese Topping: Evenly sprinkle the reserved 1/2 cup of grated cheese over the top of the dip mixture to create a golden cheesy crust when baked.
  5. Bake: Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for 45 to 50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown, bubbly, and cooked to your liking. In the original recipe, 47 minutes was used as the baking time.
  6. Cool and Serve: Once baked, allow the dip to cool for a few minutes to thicken slightly before serving. Enjoy with your choice of chips, crackers, bagel chips, pita chips, or fresh vegetable sticks.

Notes

  • Use light cream cheese and mayonnaise options to reduce fat content while maintaining creaminess.
  • Adjust seasoning with pepper, salt, and cayenne pepper to taste for your preferred spice level.
  • Ensure all ingredients and condiments are gluten-free by checking product labels if gluten sensitivity is a concern.
  • This dip pairs wonderfully with a variety of dippers like carrot sticks, celery sticks, cucumber sticks, bell pepper wedges, and more.
  • For a stronger cheese flavor, experiment with different types of hard cheeses such as sharp cheddar or a smoked cheese blend.
