Description

This Easy Bourbon Chicken recipe delivers tender, flavorful chicken pieces coated in a rich, sweet, and tangy bourbon sauce. Perfect for a quick weeknight dinner, this dish combines simple ingredients like soy sauce, bourbon, brown sugar, and garlic for an irresistible flavor profile that everyone will love.

Ingredients

Scale

Chicken and Coating

  • 3 pounds boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cut into 1-inch pieces
  • 4 tablespoons cornstarch
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Sauce

  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup chicken broth
  • ⅔ cup soy sauce
  • ⅓ cup apple juice
  • ⅓ cup ketchup
  • ¼ cup bourbon
  • 1 cup brown sugar

Cooking Oil

  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil

Instructions

  1. Coat the Chicken: In a medium bowl, combine cornstarch with salt and pepper. Toss the chicken pieces in the mixture until they are evenly coated.
  2. Brown the Chicken: Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the coated chicken pieces and brown them on both sides for about 6 minutes total. Once browned, remove the chicken from the skillet and set aside.
  3. Sauté Garlic and Prepare Sauce: In the same skillet, sauté the minced garlic for about 30 seconds until fragrant. Then add the chicken broth, soy sauce, apple juice, ketchup, bourbon, and brown sugar. Stir the mixture and bring it to a gentle boil over medium heat.
  4. Simmer with Chicken: Lower the heat to medium-low and return the browned chicken pieces to the skillet. Let the chicken simmer in the sauce for about 10 minutes, or until the sauce has reduced by half and the chicken is cooked through.
  5. Optional Thicken Sauce: If you prefer a thicker sauce, mix additional cornstarch with cold water to create a slurry, then stir it into the simmering sauce. Cook for another 1-2 minutes until the sauce thickens to your liking. Serve warm.

Notes

  • You can substitute bourbon with apple cider or orange juice if you want a non-alcoholic version.
  • Be careful when cooking with bourbon as it is flammable; avoid adding it directly to an open flame.
  • Serving suggestion: Serve over steamed white rice or with sautéed vegetables for a complete meal.
  • Leftovers can be refrigerated for up to 3 days and reheated gently on the stove.
