  • Author: Lily
  • Total Time: 20 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings (1 roll up per serving, sliced into halves or thirds) 1x
  • Diet: Halal

Description

French Dip Tortilla Roll Ups are a delicious twist on the classic French dip sandwich, featuring thinly sliced deli roast beef, provolone cheese, and crunchy French fried onions all rolled in flour tortillas, baked to golden perfection, and served with a rich, savory au jus dipping sauce.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 4 large flour tortillas (about 12 inches in diameter)
  • 8 slices provolone cheese (thinly sliced)
  • 12 ounces deli roast beef (freshly sliced, medium-thin)
  • 1 cup French fried onions (store-bought or homemade)
  • 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil

Au Jus Ingredients

  • 1 can (10.5 ounces) beef consommé
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 teaspoons low sodium soy sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

Instructions

  1. Warm Tortillas: Warm your tortillas in the microwave for 10 seconds to make rolling easier and prevent cracking during assembly.
  2. Preheat Oven and Prepare Baking Sheet: Set your oven to 425°F and line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper to prepare for baking.
  3. Assemble Roll Ups: Lay one tortilla flat and place 2 slices of provolone cheese on half of it. Top with about 3 ounces of roast beef and a generous handful of French fried onions. Brush the far edge of the tortilla lightly with olive oil to help seal it.
  4. Roll and Seal: Starting from the filled end, roll the tortilla up tightly, pressing the oiled edge to seal. Place seam-side down on the prepared baking sheet. Repeat with remaining tortillas.
  5. Brush with Olive Oil: Brush the tops and sides of each roll with the remaining olive oil to ensure a crispy, golden finish during baking.
  6. Bake Roll Ups: Bake for 8 to 10 minutes, rotating the sheet halfway through for even browning. Look for golden-brown tortillas with cheese beginning to bubble near the edges.
  7. Prepare Au Jus: While the roll ups bake, combine beef consommé, water, Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, onion powder, and garlic powder in a small saucepan. Heat over medium, whisking to blend, and bring to a gentle simmer for 3 to 4 minutes until hot and fragrant.
  8. Rest and Slice: Let the baked roll ups rest for 2 minutes on the baking sheet so the cheese sets and doesn’t ooze out. Slice each roll into halves or thirds using a sharp serrated knife.
  9. Serve: Serve the sliced roll ups immediately with the warm au jus dipping sauce for a flavorful experience.

Notes

  • Using freshly sliced deli roast beef with medium-thin slices is key for easy rolling and tender texture.
  • Warming tortillas briefly helps prevent cracking during rolling.
  • Brushing the roll ups with olive oil before baking creates a crispy, golden crust.
  • Allowing the roll ups to rest before slicing helps the cheese set and reduces mess.
  • Au jus can be made richer with beef consommé instead of regular broth for a more intense flavor.
