Ingredients

Scale

Cake

  • 3 cups All Purpose flour
  • 2/3 cups Golden Oreos (finely ground in a food processor)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 3/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1½ cups unsalted butter (softened to room temperature)
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 3 large eggs (at room temperature)
  • 2 large egg whites (at room temperature)
  • 1 Tablespoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1½ cups buttermilk (room temperature)

Golden Oreo Buttercream

  • 1½ cups unsalted butter (room temperature)
  • 4½ cups confectioners’ sugar
  • 1 cup Golden Oreos (finely ground in a food processor)
  • 1/3 cup heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt

Garnish

  • Additional Golden Oreos for garnish

Instructions

  1. Preheat and prepare pans: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and dust three 9-inch cake pans with flour, then line the bottoms with parchment paper rounds to ensure easy release of the cakes after baking.
  2. Combine dry ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together all-purpose flour, salt, baking powder, and baking soda. Set this mixture aside for later use.
  3. Cream butter and sugar: Using a stand mixer or hand mixer, beat the softened butter and granulated sugar on high speed for 2–3 minutes until the mixture is smooth, creamy, and lightened in color. Scrape down the sides and bottom of the bowl as needed.
  4. Add eggs and vanilla: Beat in the 3 whole eggs, 2 egg whites, and vanilla extract on high speed until fully combined, scraping down the bowl as necessary to ensure everything is mixed evenly.
  5. Mix dry ingredients and buttermilk: With the mixer on low speed, gradually add the dry flour mixture just until incorporated. Then, while mixer is still on low, pour in the buttermilk and mix until combined.
  6. Incorporate Oreo crumbs: Add the finely ground Golden Oreo crumbs to the batter and mix until evenly combined, creating a subtle cookie flavor throughout the cake.
  7. Divide and bake: Pour the batter evenly into the prepared cake pans. Optionally, weigh each pan to ensure even layers. Bake in the preheated oven for approximately 25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Allow the cakes to cool completely in the pans on a wire rack before frosting.
  8. Prepare the frosting: In a large mixing bowl, beat the butter on medium speed until creamy. Gradually add confectioners’ sugar, heavy cream, vanilla extract, ground Golden Oreos, and salt while mixing on low speed. Then increase to high speed and beat for 2 minutes until the frosting is light and fluffy.
  9. Assemble the cake: Place one cooled cake layer on your cake stand or serving plate. Spread about 1½ cups of frosting evenly over the top. Repeat with the second cake layer and frosting. Top with the third layer, then cover the entire cake with the remaining frosting on the top and sides to create a smooth finish.
  10. Garnish and chill: Decorate the cake with additional whole Golden Oreos as desired. Refrigerate the cake for at least 1 hour before slicing to allow the frosting to set and flavors to meld.

Notes

  • Ensure all dairy and eggs are at room temperature for better mixing and texture.
  • Ground Golden Oreos add a subtle cookie flavor; be sure to process finely to avoid chunks.
  • Using parchment paper in the pans prevents sticking and helps to remove cake layers cleanly.
  • If buttermilk is unavailable, substitute by adding 1½ tablespoons lemon juice or white vinegar to 1½ cups milk and let sit for 5 minutes.
  • Refrigerated cake should be brought to room temperature before serving for best flavor and texture.
  • Weighting cake pans is optional but helps achieve evenly sized cake layers.
