This Loaded Steak and Potato Bake is a hearty, comforting dish perfect for slow cooking. Tender cubed beef steak and diced potatoes are layered with crispy bacon bits and melted cheddar cheese, then slowly cooked with a creamy garlic sour cream mixture. Finished with fresh green onions, this slow cooker recipe is easy to prepare and delivers rich, comforting flavors perfect for a satisfying meal.

Ingredients

Scale

Meat and Potato

  • 450 g beef steak, cubed
  • 800 g potatoes, peeled and diced

Dairy

  • 200 g cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 100 ml sour cream
  • 50 ml milk

Other

  • 100 g bacon bits
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 green onions, sliced

Instructions

  1. Preparation: Begin by heating the olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the cubed beef steak to the skillet and cook until browned on all sides, which enhances flavor and seals in the juices.
  2. Layering Ingredients: In the crockpot, layer half of the diced potatoes on the bottom. Follow with half of the browned steak, then half of the bacon bits, and sprinkle with shredded cheddar cheese.
  3. Repeat Layering: Add the remaining potatoes, then the rest of the steak, bacon bits, and finish with another layer of shredded cheddar cheese to build the bake evenly.
  4. Prepare Cream Sauce: In a small bowl, mix together the sour cream, milk, minced garlic, salt, and black pepper until well combined. This mixture adds richness and flavor to the bake.
  5. Pour Sauce Over Layers: Evenly pour the sour cream mixture over the layered ingredients in the crockpot to keep everything moist and flavorful during cooking.
  6. Slow Cook: Cover the crockpot and cook on low for 6-7 hours or on high for 3-4 hours. The potatoes should become fork-tender, indicating the bake is done.
  7. Garnish and Serve: Once cooked, uncover the crockpot and sprinkle the sliced green onions on top for a fresh, mild onion flavor. Serve the bake warm to enjoy its comforting taste fully.

Notes

  • You can substitute the beef steak with chicken or pork if preferred, adjusting the cooking times accordingly.
  • For a spicier version, add a pinch of smoked paprika or cayenne pepper to the sour cream mixture.
  • Ensure potatoes are diced evenly to guarantee uniform cooking.
  • If you don’t have a crockpot, this recipe can be adapted for slow roasting in the oven at 150°C (300°F) for about 3-4 hours in a covered baking dish.
  • Leftovers can be refrigerated for up to 3 days and reheated gently on the stovetop or microwave.
